Great naturtal coconut oil August 30, 2010 QuirkyYogini (Germany) I decided to try coconut oil on my skin as a natural moisturizer. I've been using kukui nut oil, but it's expensive and I'd heard such great things about coconut oil. I have to say, I'm not a fan of the smell of coconut, but this has a very soft and subtle scent. I actually like it, so I'm OK with it.
As for how it works on the stove, I haven't tried cooking with it yet because I love the flavor of olive oil. Plus, I'm just not sure the coconut flavor will work well with the food I usually cook. I have used some on my lips, and it has a light, subtle flavor. Nothing obnoxious or very strong. I will say that my two cats definitely noticed the smell and taste, and my youngest cat has taken to sneaking up and licking my legs or feet after I've used some. (A very strange sensation, I might add!)
I really like it on my skin. I've used it a few times all over my body, and it feels very luxurious. I've had numerous massages, so the feel of oil on my body does not bother me, but it does go on quite thick, so that might bother some. The oiliness and the smell do evaporate eventually, leaving soft, smooth skin. I've even used it on my face in conjunction with the kukui oil. I have not experienced any burning of the eyes and although I have combination skin, my face has not broken out. I had maybe an extra blemish or two, but they went away fairly quickly and I believe it was just the initial adjustment to something new that did it.
One thing I'm not sure about is how it works for my hands. I have a dry patch of what I believe is eczema on the back of my left hand, and although the coconut oil is moisturizing, it is immediately soaked up and doesn't seem to help it at all. I've recently tried a combination of the coconut oil mixed with a couple drops of kukui oil for this patch, and that seemed to help, however, the best natural oil so far for this patch has been the extra virgin olive oil. Maybe because it goes on thicker? I plan to keep playing around with combinations of oils and maybe adding some emu oil into the picture since I think it's closer to the natural sebum of humans.
My next adventure will be to try it on my thirsty, very curly (3c) hair. I have used some on my scalp and on the ends of my hair, with no problems, so I believe I will have decent results. I'll update with that later.
Love the flavor and glass jar August 9, 2010 safffron This has to be one of the cleanest-tasting coconut oils. The fragrance is divine. One reason why I'm more likely to buy Spectrum is because the coconut oil is packaged in a glass jar. There's none of the potential nastiness leaching out of the plastic and into the oil. I'll spend a little more for that.
Great Product February 1, 2010 Emgie (MD) Smells good and works wonders on my hair & on my heels. Absolutely love it!
Excellent saturated fat December 14, 2009 Judith Johnson (Albany, NY) As I have been practicing a very low-carb diet for a couple of years now and try to avoid polyunsaturates and even monosaturates, this oil seems like the perfect choice when I want a non-animal fat. I was surprised at how hard the consistency is, even at room temp. The unrefined does have a sweet coconut flavor that has taken a little getting used to. I use it to coat pans when I am baking or broiling meats. I may as well confess, I usually clean off my fingers or the paper towel I was using by smearing the remains onto my hands and arms, it is a great body lotion as well.
Coconut oil is composed of 66% medium chain triglyceride. I have read that Oceanic peoples who live on a diet of fish and coconut are some of the healthiest in the world as long as they follow their traditional diets so I think it might have benefit for anyone's diet. Throughout the years, some studies have shown that MCTs can help in the process of excess calorie burning, weight loss. However, close to half of the calories in one's diet would have to be from the MCTs themselves. Therefore, consuming medium-chain triglycerides in a regular diet may or may not be beneficial to weight loss; studies are still being conducted
Best coconut oil I have had in a long time February 19, 2009 M. Nelson (CA, USA) I like the coconut fragrance and taste, plus the texture is great. It tastes good just eating a bit off of a spoon. Also use it in place of butter on my veggies.
Purchased it locally for the first time yesterday. Much better product than the last jar of Tropical Traditions that I got. Will probably buy again when I gun out.
If you want an oil with minimal taste and odor, get the Spectrum Refined oil that this same Amazon vendor sells.
